The Schechter function models a galaxy luminosity or mass distribution as a low-value power law with an exponential high-value cutoff. In stellar-mass form,
$$
\Phi(M)\,dM=\frac{\Phi_*}{M_*}
\left(\frac M{M_*}\right)^\alpha e^{-M/M_*}\,dM.
$$
