<Scott Chacon> coauthored <Pro Git by Scott Chacon and Ben Straub>, whose second edition appeared in 2014. With <Ben Straub>, he presents version control through its underlying object and history model as well as practical workflows.<Pro Git by Scott Chacon and Ben Straub>[official second-edition byline and Chapters1–3]{ref}
A key example is the separation of a recorded <version-control snapshot>[snapshot] from a <version-control branch>[branch] reference pointing into its history. That distinction explains why branching is inexpensive and why a combined history can retain multiple parents after a merge. The book connects these mechanisms to collaboration, making the stored representation part of the explanation instead of only listing commands.
