A distinguishable set of properties of a <sedimentary deposit>, including composition, grain size, structures and biological contents, interpreted in relation to its depositional environment. Spatial and vertical changes among <sedimentary facies> help reconstruct a <paleoenvironment>; no single property invariably identifies a unique setting.
