A <ring> is semiprime when it has no nonzero <nilpotent ideals>. Equivalently, a two-sided <ideal> with square zero must be zero. This is weaker than having no nonzero nilpotent elements: a matrix ring over a <field> is semiprime and can have nilpotent matrices.
