The detector figure of merit $D^*=\sqrt{a\Delta f}/\mathrm{NEP}$, where NEP is noise-equivalent <power>, $a$ detector area and $\Delta f$ electrical noise bandwidth. Its common unit is $\mathrm{cm\,Hz^{1/2}\,W^{-1}}$. A supplied detector-noise convention must be used consistently with integration time.
