The specific orbital energy is the mechanical energy per unit mass,
$$
\varepsilon=\frac{v^2}{2}-\frac{\mu}{r}=-\frac{\mu}{2a}.
$$
Its sign distinguishes bound elliptic, marginal parabolic, and unbound hyperbolic Kepler orbits.
