Vladimir Prelog helped formulate the Cahn-Ingold-Prelog priority rules for specifying molecular chirality. Ranking the groups attached to a stereogenic centre makes it possible to assign a reproducible stereochemical descriptor. A descriptor records configuration through a stated convention, rather than the sign of a sample's measured optical rotation.[ref]
