<Sphingomyelin> is a <phospholipid> whose backbone is based on <sphingosine>, rather than <glycerol>. One long <hydrocarbon> region belongs to that backbone and another comes from an attached <fatty acid>. It is a counterexample to defining every <phospholipid> by the illustrated <glycerol> scaffold.
