A complex <associative algebra> with a conjugate-linear involution satisfying the displayed product-reversal identities. An <operator algebra> closed under the Hilbert-space adjoint is a <star-algebra>. A <C-star algebra> additionally has a complete <norm> with $\|a^*a\|=\|a\|^2$.
