Statistical fluctuation
= Statistical fluctuation
A statistical fluctuation is variation between repeated random outcomes or samples. Its scale can be quantified by <variance> or <standard deviation>. For independent signal counts with a Poisson mean proportional to deposited <energy>, the absolute fluctuation grows as the square root of <energy> and its relative size decreases as the inverse square root.
