Absorption of incident radiation that promotes an emitter from a lower to an upper state. In an Einstein-rate description the rate is proportional to the relevant spectral radiation energy density. The degeneracy-weighted absorption coefficient and stimulated-emission coefficient satisfy detailed balance.
