<Symbolic factorization> computes possible nonzero positions and update dependencies from a <sparse matrix> pattern and ordering before calculating numerical factor values. The <elimination graph> predicts fill and the <elimination tree> organizes dependencies. Numerical pivoting or exceptional cancellation can make the computed factor pattern differ from this structural prediction.
