A transfer matrix stores the weights of allowed transitions between finitely many boundary states. Its powers sum weights of compatible sequences of transitions. For a cyclic boundary condition, the <matrix trace> $\operatorname{tr}(T^n)$ counts weighted closed sequences of length $n$.
