A variable-based grammar is a tuplewhere $\Sigma$ and $V$ are disjoint finite sets of terminals and variables, $S\in V$, and each production $\alpha \to \beta$ has $\alpha ,\beta \in (\Sigma \cup V{)}^{\ast }$ with at least one variable in $\alpha$.
