{synonym}

A fluid vortex is a region in which <velocity field> circulates about an axis or center. <Vorticity> measures local rotation, while <circulation> measures the integral of velocity around a closed path. A <phase vortex> is instead a <topological defect> defined by winding of an order parameter; superfluid examples connect the two notions.
