Werner Dinkelbach developed a method for nonlinear <fractional programming>. Instead of directly optimizing a ratio $f(x)/g(x)$ with positive denominator, the method repeatedly optimizes $f(x)-\lambda g(x)$ and updates $\lambda$ from the resulting ratio.
