Varying the independent <worldsheet metric> gives $T_{ab}=T[\partial_aX\cdot\partial_bX-\tfrac12\gamma_{ab}\gamma^{cd}\partial_cX\cdot\partial_dX]$. Its classical vanishing is the metric equation and produces the <Virasoro constraints>.
