A flow along latitude circles, conventionally positive eastward. Its speed <Doppler shifts> the intrinsic frequency of a disturbance. A stationary <Rossby wave> in a uniform current requires the eastward <zonal flow> to balance its westward intrinsic <phase velocity>.
