Zonal wavenumber
= Zonal wavenumber
{title2=$k=s/(a\cos\phi)$}
On a sphere, the integer $s$ counts complete zonal oscillations around a latitude circle. Its local Cartesian <wavenumber> at latitude $\phi$ is $k=s/(a\cos\phi)$ for radius $a$. The integer $s$ and the dimensional local <wavenumber> $k$ should not be interchanged in a local <dispersion relation> for <Rossby waves>.
