= Groundwater-related subsidence
{wiki=Groundwater-related_subsidence}
Groundwater-related subsidence is the sinking or settling of the ground surface that occurs as a result of the excessive withdrawal of groundwater. When groundwater is extracted from aquifers, the pressure that helps support the soil and rock above is reduced. This loss of support can lead to the compaction of sediments, particularly in unconsolidated or semi-consolidated materials, causing the ground to sink.
