William Anders is an American astronaut, engineer, retired United States Air Force officer, and businessman. He is best known for his role as the Lunar Module Pilot for the Apollo 8 mission, which was the first manned mission to orbit the Moon. During the mission, which took place in December 1968, Anders, along with crew members Frank Borman and Jim Lovell, made history by capturing the iconic "Earthrise" photograph, showcasing Earth from lunar orbit.
