Magnetic monopoles are hypothetical particles that possess a net magnetic charge, in contrast to the magnetic dipoles (like ordinary magnets) that have both a north and a south pole. In quantum field theory, Dirac showed that the existence of magnetic monopoles implies the need for a specific structure in the theory.
