These organelles are composed of magnetic iron mineral crystals, primarily magnetite (Fe3O4) or greigite (Fe3S4), which allow the bacteria to orient themselves along magnetic fields. Magnetosomes are typically encased in a lipid bilayer membrane, which helps regulate the formation of these magnetic crystals.
