This has annoyed <Ciro Santilli> for many years, it is just too wasteful of screen space on <laptops>!

Or likely more generally, on <GNOME desktop>, which is the default <desktop environment> as of <Ubuntu 22.10>.

Hide top bar on Ubuntu

If we didn't have <GUIs>, <terminal multiplexers> would be our <desktop environments>. E.g. they handle stuff like:
* window switching
* copy pasting across windows
* screen locking
* clock on the status bar (same one that holds tabs)
It is a thing of beauty.
