The Balmer jump refers to a specific phenomenon observed in the spectra of hydrogen or hydrogen-like atoms, where there is a significant discontinuity in the intensity of the spectral lines in the Balmer series. The Balmer series consists of the spectral lines corresponding to electron transitions from higher energy levels (n ≥ 3) down to the second energy level (n = 2) in hydrogen.
