Departments of France

France is divided into administrative regions known as departments. Each department serves as a local administrative division, and there are a total of 101 departments in France, which are numbered sequentially from 1 to 95 for metropolitan France and from 971 to 976 for overseas departments and territories. In terms of governance, each department has a council and a prefect appointed by the national government, who oversees the administration and implementation of laws and policies at the local level.
