A glow plug is a heating device used in diesel engines (and some model engines) to assist in starting the engine. Unlike spark plugs, which ignite the air-fuel mixture with an electrical spark in gasoline engines, glow plugs use a heating element that gets very hot when electricity passes through it. This heat helps to preheat the air in the combustion chamber, making it easier to ignite the fuel when the engine is cranked.
