John Playford (1623–1686) was an English publisher and compiler of music. He is best known for his work in the 17th century, particularly for his collections of dance music and instruction manuals. His most notable publication is "The Dancing Master," first published in 1651, which contained a variety of dances and their accompanying tunes, becoming a significant source for the social dance music of the period.
