Anthony G. Robson is a researcher in visual electrophysiology and the first author of the 2022 standard for full-field clinical electroretinography. The document specifies stimulus conditions, recording methods and reporting practices for measuring the retina's summed response to diffuse flashes of light. A shared protocol makes recordings from different laboratories more comparable.[ref]

The controlled background state is part of the measurement. Responses recorded after dark adaptation and under light adaptation probe different combinations of retinal activity; changing the adaptation condition can change a waveform even when the underlying tissue is unchanged. Specifying adaptation, flash conditions and electrodes therefore helps distinguish a physiological difference from a procedural difference. The standard addresses generalized retinal function; a summed response does not directly locate every abnormality within an individual retinal cell.[ref]
