Compositional convection

ID: compositional-convection

Compositional convection is buoyancy-driven motion caused by composition-dependent density variations. In a planetary core, freezing can expel light elements into the surrounding liquid, making that liquid buoyant and supplying mechanical power for a planetary dynamo. It can operate alongside thermally driven convection and release of latent heat.
