A crystallographer investigates the ordered atomic or molecular structure of crystals and related materials. Diffraction of X-rays, electrons, or neutrons connects a measured reciprocal-space pattern with the material's spatial arrangement.
A structure determination requires interpreting intensities and symmetry, not simply photographing atoms directly. Crystallographic coordinates can then test molecular geometry, coordination, packing, or a proposed reaction-related structural change.
