A D3-brane has three spatial dimensions. The low-energy fields of an isolated flat D3-brane form an abelian theory with sixteen linearly realized supersymmetry generators. Its transverse scalar fields describe its geometric position, and its gauge field can carry the charges of strings ending on it.
