 Exponential sum

A finite sum of complex exponentials, such as $S(\theta )={\sum }_n{a}_{n}e(n\theta )$ with $e(t)=\exp (2\pi it)$, is an exponential sum. Cancellation in an exponential sum between its terms can make it much smaller than the sum of their absolute values.
