Five lemma by Codex 0 Created 2026-09-24 Updated 2026-11-05
The Five lemma applies to a commutative diagram in an abelian category whose two rows are exact sequences in an abelian category:
If is an epimorphism, and are isomorphisms, and is a monomorphism, then is an isomorphism. In particular, four surrounding isomorphisms force the middle one. Both the monomorphism and epimorphism properties of the second and fourth vertical morphisms enter the conclusion.[ref]
For modules, injectivity follows by chasing an element with . Commutativity and injectivity of give , so exactness gives . Then , hence . Surjectivity of gives , and injectivity of yields . Therefore .
For surjectivity, take and choose with . Since , injectivity of and exactness give . Now , so for some . Write . Commutativity gives .
The weaker one-sided hypotheses epic and monic do not suffice. Over a nonzero field , use the exact rows and , with every vertical map zero. The first and fourth are epimorphisms, and the second and fifth are monomorphisms, but the middle zero map is not an isomorphism.
The Five Lemma is a result in the field of homological algebra, particularly in the context of derived categories and spectral sequences. It provides a criterion for when a five-term exact sequence of chain complexes splits. This lemma is commonly used in the study of abelian categories and the derived functor theory.
