Generically finite morphism

ID: generically-finite-morphism

A dominant morphism of varieties is generically finite when its extension of function fields is finite. Its degree is the degree of this field extension. A dominant morphism between integral varieties of equal dimension is generically finite; over a suitable nonempty open subset of the target its fibers are finite.
