Gyrotaxis is the orientation response of swimming cells to the competition between gravity-induced torque and fluid rotation. A bottom-heavy spherical cell tends to point upward in still fluid, while ambient vorticity rotates it. The response changes the mean swimming direction and can focus cells or contribute to bioconvection.
