 Homotopy equivalence

Spaces $X$ and $Y$ are homotopy equivalent when there are continuous mapssuch that $g\circ f$ is homotopic to ${\mathrm{id}}_X$ and $f\circ g$ is homotopic to ${\mathrm{id}}_Y$.
