Hydrostatic leakage through a basal seal
ID: hydrostatic-leakage-through-a-basal-seal
A dense porous gravity current of height places excess hydrostatic pressure on a basal seal. For seal permeability of a porous medium and thickness , Darcy law gives downward flux . Dividing the stored height-volume balance by porosity gives a linear drainage term . The coefficient has inverse-time units and does not contain an extra factor of the aquifer permeability.
