The Jahn-Teller effect is an instability of a nonlinear molecular arrangement with an orbitally degenerate electronic ground state toward a symmetry-lowering distortion. An octahedral high-spin ion has unequal occupation of its orbitals and often undergoes tetragonal elongation.
