Assessment of environmental burdens over a stated product or process boundary, including production, operation and disposal. Comparisons require a common functional unit, such as delivered energy or passenger distance. For a fuel, tailpipe emissions alone omit feedstock cultivation or extraction, processing, transport and changes in land carbon stocks.
