N. C. Pedersen coauthored the 1987 isolation study of the feline retrovirus associated with an immunodeficiency-like syndrome, now discussed under feline immunodeficiency virus. The work combined isolation of a T-lymphotropic agent, antibody evidence and experimental transmission, connecting a clinical observation with a testable infectious explanation.[ref]
In the studied cattery, 10 of25 cats showing ill health were seropositive, compared with1 of18 apparently normal cats. The respective proportions are and about . This contrast is an association within that sampled group, rather than a population-wide prevalence estimate. Kittens inoculated with blood or plasma from naturally infected animals subsequently developed the reported syndrome features, adding a different kind of evidence from the cross-sectional counts.[ref]
The experimental design illustrates why isolating a virus, detecting an antibody response and measuring disease after inoculation answer related but different questions. The verified contribution here is this coauthored study; the original initial-only author spelling is preserved.
