Nonuniqueness of geophysical inversion
ID: nonuniqueness-of-geophysical-inversion
Different subsurface models can produce the same measured field. A gravity anomaly, for example, does not uniquely separate density, body shape and regional background. Geological constraints and complementary observations reduce this ambiguity; an inferred density should retain the model and reference-field assumptions used to obtain it.
