If optical depth is $\tau (z)={\tau }_s{e}^{-z/H}$, multiplying opacity by $a$ raises any fixed-optical-depth surface by $H\ln a$. In a constant lapse-rate layer this changes its temperature by $-\Gamma H\ln a$.
