 Plane strain

In plane strain, the deformation map has $x_1=x_1(X_1,X_2)$, $x_2=x_2(X_1,X_2)$ and $x_3=X_3$. The out-of-plane stretch is one and out-of-plane shear vanishes. This kinematic condition need not make the out-of-plane stress vanish.
