A melt composition in equilibrium with its source before substantial post-segregation fractional crystallization, mixing or crustal contamination. Reconstructing it from an erupted basalt commonly requires restoring lost crystals and checking mineral–melt equilibrium. A crystal-rich erupted rock is not automatically a high-temperature primary liquid merely because its bulk Mg content is high.
