 Proline-catalysed aldol reaction

An enamine formed reversibly between proline and an enolizable carbonyl compound attacks an electrophilic carbonyl. The carboxylic acid group can orient and activate the electrophile; hydrolysis releases the aldol product and regenerates proline.
