For simple-root generators

e_{i}, f_{i}, h_{i}

with

[h_{i}, e_{j}] = a_{ij} e_{j}

, the Serre relations include

[e_{i}, f_{j}] = δ_{ij} h_{i}

and

(ad e_{i})^{1 - a_{ij}} e_{j} = (ad f_{i})^{1 - a_{ij}} f_{j} = 0

for

i \neq = j

. The off-diagonal Cartan entries are nonpositive integers. These relations restrict which iterated simple-root brackets remain nonzero.
