 Singular chain complex

The chain complex whose degree-$n$ group is freely generated over $R$ by the singular simplices $\sigma :{\Delta }^n\to X$. Its boundary is the alternating sum of restrictions to codimension-one faces. The homology of this complex is singular homology.
