Source. Good primer. The main difference from older systems is that they fly closer to Earth, and are not geostationary. Asa result, you have better latency. But you also need a bunc of them to have continuous coverage of an area.
It is understandable why. It only matters in higher speeds/gears and mostly in emergency or when going downhill. But by God, in those cases, it is alife saving skill!
