An acknowledgement reports receipt according to the protocol's rules. A TCP cumulative acknowledgement names the next expected byte; it does not establish that the application has durably acted on all preceding data.
A delayed acknowledgement postpones a response briefly so that one acknowledgement may cover more data or accompany returning data. Its timer can interact with Nagle's algorithm to delay a short exchange.
